ARE YOU AT RISK FOR OSTEOPOROSIS?

Osteoporosis in Colorado Springs is a disease that commonly leads to broken bones because of the high rate at which bone is deteriorating leading to low bone mass and loss of bone density. Broken bones are often caused by falls. The most commonly broken bones are the vertebra of the spine, hips, and forearms. Often, people do not get diagnosed with osteoporosis until after a bone has been broken. According to the NCBI, there are currently 200 million people worldwide who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP PREVENT BONE LOSS IN OUR FUTURES in Colorado Springs?

Most of us are aware of the common risk factors of osteoporosis, but many of us wait too late before we take action to protect the health of our bones. Some risk factors of developing low bone density, such as gender, age, and ethnicity, are out of our hands. However, the risk factors that we do have control over are things that we should start doing at any age in order to proactively ward off the deterioration of our bone density. This is why your Chiropractors at True North in Colorado Springs recommend a few things to help prevent Osteoporosis in the future:

  1. Avoid toxins. Toxins in our bodies promote the premature breakdown of the skeletal system. Some of these toxins, like the use of tobacco or high consumption of alcohol, are more obvious. However, common pesticides used on fruits and vegetables, and high amounts of refined sugars or other inflammatory foods in our diets can also be sources of toxins.
  2. Consume proper nutrients. Calcium is only one of the important minerals for supporting bone health. Magnesium, nickel, selenium, zinc, and more are essential to maintaining proper bone density. These minerals and their supporting vitamins are found in many healthy foods, and are easily consumed in a healthy diet. Kale, broccoli, canned salmon, blueberries, sweet potatoes, almonds, soy, and coconuts are all great sources of these vitamins and minerals. Many people turn to supplements to help support their calcium and vitamin D intake, but sourcing them through food is proven more effective, and easier for our bodies to utilize properly.
  3. Perform weight-bearing exercises. The bones’ response to the stress of weight-bearing exercise is to generate more cells and become denser. These exercises include jogging, lifting weights, dancing, walking, etc. The best guideline to keep our bones healthy is 30 minutes of exercise per day. Consistency is key though, as bone health can begin to deteriorate as soon as we stop exercising.
  4. See your Colorado Springs Chiropractor. Not only do regular adjustments increase our range of motion which decreases the risk of falls or other injuries, they also correct subluxations. When a subluxation occurs, the bones have shifted out of proper alignment and often times begin to break down. By receiving a proper adjustment by your Chiropractor, that vertebrae is put back into place, preventing the potential break down that would have occurred. Your chiropractor can also monitor the density of your vertebrae and will be alerted to changes in bone health. Possibly, one of the most important factors of bone loss prevention that your chiropractor can help with is reducing the need for medications for many common health issues. Steroids, proton pump inhibitors, antidepressants, and other medications have been linked to an increased risk of bone density loss, and a diagnosis of osteoporosis later in life.
